Ask your recruiter before you sign (8 questions)
  1. Cancellation terms. If the hospital cancels, how much notice do I get, and is any pay or housing covered?
  2. Guaranteed hours. How many hours a week are guaranteed, and what happens to pay and stipends if I'm called off?
  3. Float policy. Will I float, to which units, and am I oriented to them first?
  4. Missed-shift penalties. What's deducted if I miss a shift (sick, weather), and is it taken from the stipend?
  5. Overtime rate. Is overtime 1.5× the taxable base rate or the blended rate? When does it start?
  6. Holiday rate & requirements. Which holidays am I required to work, and what's the holiday rate?
  7. Extension terms. If they offer an extension, do the rate and stipends stay the same?
  8. Tax home. Do you verify my tax home, and what happens to stipends if I don't have one?

After you sign, log the contract and save the answers on it under Assignments.

Ceilings: GSA per diem FY2027, averaged over your contract dates. Rule: stipends up to the federal per diem rate aren't taxable when you keep a tax home and the assignment is temporary; anything above it is wages (IRS Publication 463). Estimates only, not tax advice. Offers stay in this browser.

How the math works

  • Housing ceiling = the GSA lodging rate for the work ZIP × 7, averaged over your actual contract days (some areas change by season).
  • Meals ceiling = the GSA M&IE rate × 7.
  • Anything above a ceiling is taxable wages. Without a tax home, or on an assignment expected to last over a year, all stipends are taxable.
  • State-by-state ceilings: stipend by state. Tax home rules: the tax home guide.
